several questions on the culturagram prompt for clients to self-identify in terms of the cultural identities they feel connected to and to provide some background information for these cultural identities. self-identification can be difficult, for example, in the case of children, or a family member who feels ambivalent about his or her ethnicity. use of the culturagram can facilitate client discussion about ethnic identities in light of their current beliefs and feelings. (hox 2013).
the culturagram prompts clients to respond to questions about their particular cultural identities in the following ways: (1) through the use of a 4-point likert-type scale for the question, how often do you think about your ethnic heritage in your life (low, medium, high, or does not apply to me) (2) with a statement that encourages elaboration of cultural details (such as to what ethnic group(s) they self-identify as belonging, etc.). it is important to note that while the client may have strong relationships with one particular ethnic group, he or she may not be in a position to identify as belonging to more than one cultural group. for example, many latinos, such as those with mexican heritage, may identify as hispanic, but would not recognize other ethnic groups ( sommer 1997 ). therefore, some of the questions on the culturagram may not be applicable to some clients. if multiple cultural groups are relevant to a particular client, the counselor can probe for details of a particular group's history, customs, language, art and literature, or religion, and then discuss the cultural group's role in the client's life. in some cases, such as that of black americans, there is little difference in the overarching culture shared by all black americans, and only differences that are specific to subcultural groups ( such as the blues, rock, soul, gospel, and jazz subcultures) and only of importance in the understanding and support of certain aspects of african american culture. the counselor can use the culturagram to determine if additional inquiry is needed to reach important implications for treatment. 3d9ccd7d82
